Sierra Helada: Albir to Benidorm Ridge Traverse (Coastal High Line)

This runs from Albir across the top of Sierra Helada and eventually drops you out near Benidorm.

It starts on that wide track everyone uses out of Albir. The one that feels more like a road than a trail. You don’t think about it much. Just get moving.

After a bit the slope starts doing its thing. Not steep enough to complain about, just enough that you notice you’re working. The kind where you slow down without deciding to.

The track cuts across the side of the mountain for a while. Long lines. No urgency to it. You can see where it’s going but it takes its time getting there.

At some point you stop being “below the ridge” and realise you’re actually on it. There isn’t a moment where it happens. It just sort of… is.

Sea off to the left. Inland to the right. Nothing dramatic about either, just there.

Underfoot changes a bit. Less of the easy gravel, more rock. Not difficult, just enough to stop you drifting. You start placing your feet again instead of just moving.

The middle section doesn’t really have a shape. It just rolls along. Up a bit, down a bit, flatten out, then back up again. You stop trying to read it after a while.

There are a few spots where the ground opens out and you can switch off for a minute. Then it narrows again and you’re back to watching it.

Benidorm shows up early but it doesn’t feel like a destination. It sits off to one side and doesn’t really get any closer for ages. You just keep going and let it do its thing.

There’s a section where the ridge feels slightly higher and cleaner. Bit more air around you. That’s probably the best part, if there is one.

Then you’re past it without really noticing.

The descent starts without much warning. You just realise the ground is sloping the other way. First gently, then a bit more.

Some loose bits. Nothing serious. Just enough to make you pay attention again.

The sound changes before anything else. Wind drops off and you start hearing things from below. Not loud, just there.

You don’t “arrive” anywhere. You just end up off the mountain.

The paths get wider again. The ground feels flatter. You look up and the ridge you’ve just crossed already feels separate from where you are.

That’s about it.

Start in Albir, follow the top, and it eventually lets you off near Benidorm. No loop, no reset. Just one long line across the ridge.
